Reiki energy healing

Reiki means universal energy in Japanese. This invisible Reiki universal energy is in and all around you. It was developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui, and came to Europe in the 1980s. Reiki is a safe, natural, and very gentle technique where energy flows from the practitioner’s hands to your body. It works on the basis that balancing and strengthening your life force energy will help you relax, assist the body’s natural healing processes, and develop emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. This popular treatment can be used alongside traditional medicine or other therapies.

How a Reiki practitioner works

Before practising Reiki, the practitioner will talk with you briefly to know about any physical pain or psychological difficulties you are experiencing. You then settle yourself comfortably either laying down or in a chair. It’s best to wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing so that you can relax more easily.

To give Reiki, the practitioner places her hands on or just above particular parts of your clothed body, staying for a few minutes on each part. She may stay longer on certain areas, this depends on your particular energy. A treatment session lasts about 1 hour.

How you experience Reiki is personal and changes each time. You may feel the practitioner’s hands as hot or cooling or feel waves of energy throughout your body. You may see colours in your mind or relive a memory. You may experience a release of tension and laugh or cry. Your body might feel heavy or very light. You may drift off into a dream-like state. Whatever your experience, people often say that they feel intensely relaxed after treatment.

There is no recommended number of sessions, this is your personal choice.

Health benefits of Reiki

When you suffer from negative stress and anxiety, your mind and body are in constant ‘fight or flight’ mode. The stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline run through you and you don’t know how to stop ‘the machine’.

The relaxing nature of Reiki helps you de-stress, alleviates anxiety and allows your mind and body to gently move to a ‘rest and restore’ state. By doing so, it can improve your mood and help you sleep better.

Distance Reiki

Reiki can be practised either in person with both yourself and the practitioner in the same room or it can be practised with yourself and the practitioner in different places. Just as in a physical session, after an initial short conversation together, the treatment begins. By choosing distance Reiki you can receive treatment from wherever you are in the world.

How do you learn to practice Reiki?

You do not learn Reiki in the traditional sense, you are attuned to it by a Reiki Master (teacher) who passes this energy onto you. This can be a powerful experience. Once you have received a Reiki attunement you have it for life, it doesn’t go away or fade. When you become a Reiki practitioner, you strengthen your own energy by practising self Reiki regularly and meditating on the 5 Reiki principles handed down by Mikao Usui:

Just for today:

Do not anger

Do not worry

Be grateful

Work with diligence

Be kind to others
